"Open After My Death" was established by Los Angeles businessman Ira Newman.  In 2006 corporate headquarters a medical emergency made him aware of his own mortality and he became aware of a very important service that many people would require.

After several physician visits where words like "sudden death" and "you are taking the medication to keep you alive" were used on a fairly consistent basis the reality of the situation became apparent.  He realized he could be here one minute and be gone the next.  He also realized that many people, friends, family and business associates counted on him.  He knew he would like to find some way to leave messages for these people if he were to die suddenly.

While thinking about the solution to this problem he also realized some things.  While much of the population was aging and  beginning to realize they were mortal, there was a whole group of people who were not concerned about aging but put their lives on the line every day they went to work.  These people are our first responders and military.

As we have seen so many times, many of these people leave for their jobs only to never return. Many of these people are young and have young families.

Historically, the only way to leave messages for people was to either leave an envelope containing written messages or recordings with their attorney to be distributed after their death.  Another method was to leave these messages and recordings with their private papers labeled with the words "Open After My Death".

Both of these methods have flaws.   Today not all people have attorneys to handle estate planning matters.  With online Will creation and advice, many people are taking the do-it- yourself approach to creating their final Will.

While attorneys are bound by confidentiality rules, there are cases where an individual wants only certain people to be aware of this information.  This requires that the information be found and distributed.  This would require a family member or close friend  to be aware of the existence of this information.  The individual would have to rely on a friend or relative to locate and distribute the information and the family member or close friend would have access to all of the information without a confidentiality agreement.  Also, unless secured in a fireproof, theft proof environment there is always chance of physical loss.

This need lead to the creation of "Open After My Death".  With this service, anyone can now leave messages in almost any format for the important people in their lives.  The messages are private and can only be viewed by the designated recipients.  The messages would be distributed to the recipients when properly designated people notify "Open After My Death" and the death has been independently confirmed. The use of "Open After My Death" is a important addition to any estate plan.
