How It Works

What we do.

Until recently a person wishing to leave final words or instructions to friends, family or business associates was limited to writing letters.  These letters were entrusted to an attorney or left in a location that was sure to be found upon death.

"Open After My Death" is a service that provides you with the ability to upload documents including word processing documents, video and audio files to our secure servers.  These documents will be delivered to the people you designate after you die.  Who gets what information is strictly confidential.

What you do.

As a member of "Open After My Death" you will:
  • 1.) CREATE A LIST OF RECIPIENTS. Enter a list of people who you want to receive any messages from you after your death.
  • 2.) CREATE A LIST OF NOTIFIERS. Enter a list of individuals who will have the responsibility of notifying us that you have died
  • 3.) UPLOAD DOCUMENTS. Upload any type of digital media to be distributed to your recipient list after your death.
A discripiton of each of these activities is below.

 RECIPIENTS

Recipients are those people you designate to receive the information you save on our system.   The type of plan you have determines how many  Recipients you can designate on our system and you designate any number of Recipients for each document you upload.

Recipients will not be notified of their status and will not know (unless you tell them) that you have left something for them on our system.

After you death and after we heve been notified by your designated Notifier, we will confirm that fact and distribute your documents to the designated Recipients.

NOTIFIERS

Notifiers are the people you designate to notify us that you have passed away.

These people should be highly trusted individuals who you are sure will carry out your wishes.  It is important that you tell them about your membership and how important it is they notify us at the correct time.

You may designate as many Notifiers as you wish. We suggest that you designate more than one Notifier.  After you enter the Notifier information into our system we will forward you an email that you can then forward to your Notifiers telling them of their responsibility.

Notifiers do not have access to any documents unless they are also designated Recipients.

DOCUMENTS

Documents can be just about any type of electronic media that can be stored on a computer.   Documents can include:

  1. Word Processing Documents
  2. Spreadsheets
  3. Photographs
  4. Voice messages
  5. Video Files

When you upload a Document you will select from a list of Recipients who will receive this file.  You may add any number of Recipients to each Document.

Suggestion

Recipients

Recipients are the people you wish to receive the documents that you upload to our site.  You upload information about each Recipient to our database so they can be sent the documents you have left for them.

Recipients can be anyone you choose and may include:
  • Spouses
  • Children
  • Siblings
  • Parents
  • Close friends
  • Co-Workers
  • Former bosses
  • Current and past lovers
  • Business associates

The plan you choose determines the number of Recipients you may have.  We suggest that you print out and complete the Recipient Input Form available on the My Account page before you begin entering your recipients.

Notifiers

Notifiers are the people you designate to notify us of your death.  They should include trusted close friends and/or family. You upload information about the Notifiers you designate to our secure server.

Notifiers do not have access to any material that you upload to our server unless they are also designated Recipients.

Notifiers should be trusted individuals including:

  • Your spouse
  • Your children
  • Brothers and Sisters
  • Close personal friends
  • Your attorney
  • Your Minister/Pastor/Rabbi

Before entering your Notifiers information you should print out the Notifier Input document located on the My Account page.  Complete the Notifier Input form for each Notifier.

We recommend that you designate at least two Notifiers but no more than five.

Documents

Documents include just about any form of media that you can store on a computer. These include:

  • Word processing documents
  • Spreadsheets
  • Photographs
  • Voice messages
  • Video files

As you upload each document you will be prompted with a list of Recipients that you have previously designated.  You may assign as many Recipients as you want to each Document.

None of your recipients have access to any of these documents until we are notified and have confirmed that you have died.  Then only the Recipients assigned to the Document will receive the Document.
